Leap of Faith

The leap of faith makes legs reluctant
though every thought screams jump.
The price to pay–a jolt of pain–
is bargain compared to Golgotha
among Greeks I never knew.

Dreams to crack the city’s crust–
to topple society’s towers of tyranny–
float away as I fall into memories
crammed into the crevices
beneath the divorces and defeats.

A smile to the stranger strangled
by stress, relieved by sight of my teeth,
the miles walked with Lauren to Johansen High,
to downtown, to church, to coffee,
her child I promised never to leave.

Tears fly off my cheeks as they did
in my bedroom, lab of all my regrets.
